BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Troops from U.S. Army Europe's 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment

discovered several improvised explosive devices during clearing operations in the East

Rashid District of the Iraqi capital Oct. 8. The eastern Baghdad operations are aimed at

clearing out the al-Qaeda in Iraq presence in the area.

Troops from Company H, 3rd Squadron, 2nd SCR found a commandwired 82mm mortar

IED and a deepburied IED in their sector, while Soldiers of Company G reported one IED

explosion in their sector. There was no damage or casualties reported from that

blast. The unit also discovered a building rigged to explode, that detonated and

damaged the building, but did not cause any casualties.

The 3-2nd SCR's Company I received a tip that there was an IED alongside a road in

their sector. The device detonated as an explosive ordnance disposal team robot

approached it, but caused no casualties or damage.

Several small weapons caches were also discovered during clearing operations in eastern

Baghdad. The caches contained a shotgun; a 9mm pistol; two rocket-propelled grenade

launchers, and more than 250 rounds of small arms ammunition. Also found were five

Iraqi army uniforms, brass knuckles, two knives and various bomb-making materials.

Company I came under small arms fire while conducting operations in the area the same

day. An Apache helicopter air weapons team from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade fired one

Hellfire missile into a building from which the shots were fired, stopping the attack.

There was no collateral damage reported.
