Honoring the graduating class of 2015, commencement ceremony for Seoul American High School graduates was held at Blue Square Theatre located at Itaewon, Yongsan, June 6. Hundreds of graduates' families, friends gathered at the auditorium inside the Blue Square building to wish their promising future ahead of them.

The event started with the presentation of colors by JROTC Color Guard, followed by national anthems sung by SAHS Show Choir. Then, David Neaverth, one of the graduates and national honor society students, gave opening remarks.

"I like to start off by welcoming the families, friends, teachers and distinguished guests and most importantly the graduating class of 2015. I've been privileged with a gift of cultural understanding coming from overseas, experiencing diversity," He said. "Sometimes you never know the value of the moment until it becomes the memory. I encourage all of you, class of 2015, not to let today become that. If you find those few seconds to reflect, it will make the rest of the day that much more special."

Col. Maria P. Eoff, garrison commander for U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, praised their achievements and expresses her appreciation. "Congratulations to our graduates for accomplishing this goal. I am honored and humbled to be a part of this important ceremony," she said.

"First, all of you are called to be a leader. Leadership is strength of character in action; Leadership defines success. Second, remember the acronym 'CLIFF.' The 'C' in CLIFF is for consistency -- the use of disciplined and deliberate words/actions. The 'L' stands for learning. The 'I' is for integrity -- it is the strong moral foundation which guides our thoughts, words and actions. The 'F' is for family -- family is a metaphor for relationships and interdependence. And the last 'F' is for faith. Having faith in yourself and faith in others gives you the wherewithal to overcome challenges."

After the keynote speech given by Col Eoff, salutatory address given by Joshua Rebel and valedictory address given by Mara Brown was followed.

Chung Min Smith, one of the SAHS graduates, says "Today is the moment where I have been looking forward to come but I still feel attached to SAHS. I am pretty much anxious and nervous, thinking that I am actually graduating this school but at the same time, I can't wait to get out there and start a new life." She is going to attend Korea University majoring in Chinese literature this September.

Each graduate was presented diplomas by Ms. Kathleen Reiss, principal of SAHS, and then were given a special time to recognize their parents after the confirmation of diplomas. They appreciated them with red roses and big hugs for supporting them with economic support, and everlasting love.
