KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (April 3, 2015) -- A Soldier from the 605th Contingency Contracting Team at Fort Drum, New York, became the newest member of the 500-pound club March 21 here at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.
Each month the local morale, welfare and recreation gym hosts an event for individuals who wish to become a part of its exclusive weightlifting club. There are several categories for both male and female to participate. Staff Sgt. Emily Gunter attempted the 500-pound club in the female division.
"Physical training is imperative for contracting Soldiers in order to meet mission readiness and to help combat stressors," said Capt. Timothy Hall, 605th Contingency Contracting Team contracting management officer. "Once again, Sergeant Gunter performs above the standard."
Gunter lifted a combined 670 pounds. Her combined lifts were separated into the squat, dead lift and bench press. Gunter was able to squat 215 pounds, dead lift 275 pounds and bench press 180 pounds.
"Staying fit is something that I take very seriously and is an important part of my life," Gunter said.
"Sergeant Gunter is a role model for anyone in or out of uniform when it comes to lifting weights. She is very dedicated at her craft, and I don't think she has missed a workout since she has been deployed," said Maj. Mark Corn, deputy commander for the Regional Contracting Center-South in Afghanistan.
The 605th CCT is deployed to Afghanistan to conduct theater-wide operational contracting support. It is part of the 925th Contingency Contracting Battalion at Fort Drum. The 925th CCBn provides garrison and expeditionary contracting support to 10th Mountain Division (Light) and Fort Drum tenant units and organizations in order to ensure forces have the required supplies and services.
