FORT A.P. HILL, Va. - U.S. Army Garrison Fort A.P. Hill renamed the post community activity center the Ambrose Fitness Center on March 6. The post's main gymnasium, Ambrose houses exercise equipment, free weights, racquetball and basketball courts.

The new name honors two Civil War generals Lt. Gen. Ambrose Powell Hill, who fought for the Confederacy and for whom the post is named, and Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who fought for the Union. Burnside and Hill were classmates and friends at the U.S. Military Academy before the war. During the Civil War they opposed each other during the Battle of Antietam in Maryland.

About a year ago the fitness center staff asked customers for suggestions for a new name for the facility. Ambrose was the consensus choice. Garrison commander Lt. Col. David A. Meyer agreed and on Friday he and Command Sgt. Maj. Alex Ho placed the new sign in front of the facility.
