FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 4, 2015) -- Want to challenge yourself both physically and mentally? Sign up for the annual five-hour Adventure Race, which takes place at 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at Uchee Creek Campground and Marina.
The race includes mountain biking, trekking, paddling, navigation and mystery events, but not in that order.
"Each team will draw for a colored marble to decide the order of events," said Spencer Folds, race director.
He said the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports hosts the race to promote physical fitness through athletic events.
"The total length of the race will be between 20-25 miles," Folds said. He said participants should expect to bike 50 percent of the time, trek and run 30 percent and canoe 20 percent.
The mandatory gear list per person includes a hydration pack with a minimum of two liters of water, a whistle and a mountain bike, Folds said. The mandatory gear list per team will be a compass and a cell phone for emergency use only.
He said there will be an ambulance on site.
"Our Outdoor Recreation department has all of this gear available for check (out) if an athlete is in need of them," Folds said. "MWR will provide the canoe, paddles and life vest."
He said renting all the items needed could average under $20.
"In various locations throughout the race, we will challenge each team with mystery events (and) tests," Folds said. "Athletes could expect to be challenged mentally and physically. Orienteering is a necessity (for) at least one team member (with an) intermediate skill-level."
Folds said orienteering will consist of navigating through the campground to find certain checkpoints using a topographical map.
The race is open to the public for ages 16 and older.
The cost is $40 per individual, $60 per two-person team and $75 per three-person team.
Awards will be presented to first, second and third place winners in each group.
Early registration ends Feb. 27, Folds said.
"(Participants) will be able to register the day of, but we highly recommend they register early due to the new access restrictions to the installation or they can travel the long way around and come in via the Fort Mitchell area," he said.
Put those skills to the test and register in person at Smith Fitness Center or online at www.active.com.
