FORT SILL, Okla. (Nov. 13, 2014) -- Rinehart Fitness Center's staff hosted a Holiday Survival Fitness Extra-vaganza Nov. 8 at the gym.
The 9:30 a.m. morning workout and nutrition tips were to showcase the fitness classes offered by Fort Sill Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, and to provide suggestions for healthy holiday treats.
About 70 athletes came and went during the two-hour event.
"We have a good variety of fitness classes -- strength and cardio exercises, because doing both together is very important," said Claudia Mejia, Fort Sill Garrison Fitness coordinator, and Rhinehart manager. "I want the participants to know what each class is about, how it is put together and what we work on."
The 20-minute mini sessions at the extravaganza included Zumba, body sculpting with weights, cardio kickboxing, 3-D abdominal workout, and total circuit training. Participants were also provided complimentary MWR grab bags, which included a water bottle, sweat band and exercise stretch bands with an instruction booklet.
Jordan Kuhs, Rinehart assistant manager, kicked off the event workout with a warm up.
"Have fun, smile and sweat," she said in her welcome.
Family member Alicia Greenhouse said she attended the extravaganza to get in her fitness for the day. She was one of the athletes at Zumba, which is part of her regular exercise regimen.
"I do it to stay healthy and release tension and stress from work," she said.
She added she runs and lifts weights. "The fitness classes are fun and exciting and full of energy," Greenhouse said.
One of the popular workouts was Cardio Kickboxing led by martial artist Thomas Felder. Participants broke a sweat they performed fast-paced punching and kicking routines.
With the holidays coming up, Mejia wanted people to become aware of healthy eating and snacking so a nutrition table featured healthy holiday treats.
Between the workouts, participants helped themselves to grapes, bananas, apples, no-bake energy bites and energy bars and juice. Kelly Russell, Rhinehart recreation aide, provided fruit smoothers and recipes for the featured treats and answered questions about the foods.
