BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan--The 401st Army Field Support Brigade is working to right-size the footprint, equipment density and personnel in anticipation of the Resolute Support mission that will be the next phase of operations in Afghanistan.

Col. Matthew J. Ferguson, 401st AFSB commander, escorted United States Forces-Afghanistan Deputy Commanding General Maj. Gen. Jeffrey N. Colt and 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command Commanding General Brig. Gen. Donnie B. Walker on a tour of brigade assets Sept. 4 and discussed what has been accomplished recently and what is planned to position the brigade for missions over the next several months through the mechanism of the Area Development Plan. As a district mayor COL Ferguson and the 401st Brigade facilitated the integration with Task Force Trailblazer and the Bagram Airfield Garrison Command to address billeting, facilities, material and land management and, force protection across Bagram Airfield and the enduring legacy of the 401st deployment to Afghanistan.

Ferguson outlined how the brigade was able to provide billeting for over 1,000 contractors in hardened structures to move them out of tents; and he emphasized that force protection is one of his focus areas going forward and that the recent consolidation of billeting within the 401st supports the improved shelter and security for the 1,000 LOGCAP teammates soon to be accommodated within brigade housing. Lt. Col. William H. Guenther, Brigade chief of staff, explained that the brigade is decreasing the number of facilities and will be down to the number required for Resolute Support within the next few weeks.

"Assess risk and mobilize resources to make the most impact," advised Colt.

Logistics Civil Augmentation Program military, civilian and contractor personnel also briefed Colt on their efforts to streamline operations and how they are positioning to be at the right size and proper scale for future missions as the theater population and requirements are drawn down. LOGCAP contractors take direction from the LOGCAP Battalion that is subordinate to 401st AFSB.
