As we celebrate the 238th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we recall the valor and vision demonstrated by our founding fathers, who declared independence and gave birth to our great Nation-a country founded on the principles of liberty, freedom, and democracy for all of its people. However, freedom is never free. Our independence is possible because of the men and women of our Armed Forces, who continue to proudly defend our freedom. On this Fourth of July, let us be grateful for the blessings that freedom represents and for the opportunities it affords.

Thank you for what you do every day for AMC, the Army team, and our country. This holiday weekend is a well-deserved break from work to enjoy summertime activities and time with family and friends. Celebrating America's Independence conjures up visions of traditional summer events such as parades, picnics, and fireworks. I highly encourage you to celebrate the holiday, while keeping safety as a priority at all times.

Fireworks can be awe-inspiring and immensely entertaining when properly handled. Unfortunately, on average, 200 people go to the emergency room everv day with fireworks-related injuries around the July 4th holiday. Even sparklers burn hot enough to ignite clothing or injure unprotected eyes. Contact your state Fire Marshal's office for a list of permissible fireworks. In the long run, it may be best to leave fireworks to the professionals and attend a fireworks show.

Traditionally, this holiday weekend also affords the opportunity to travel to favorite recreation areas, visit relatives, or attend patriotic demonstrations. I stress the importance of using seat belts, not speeding, and not driving while fatigued or intoxicated. As you make your travel plans,

I encourage you to use the TRiPS online assessment tool, https://cac.trips.safety.army.mil/army/Home.aspx . This tool helps you identify the risks associated with your travel plans and provides sound recommendations to make your journey successful. If your holiday plans include the water, please ensure you follow the appropriate rules of boating and always wear a flotation device. At the beach, be especially mindful of rip currents. If you get caught, don't panic; swim parallel to the shore until free. Summer means fun in the sun! Please be safe and don't let a heat-related illness ruin your day-take preventive measures for sunburn and heat injury.

My family and I extend our very best wishes to all of you for a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Happy Birthday America! AMC SAFE IS ARMY STRONG!
