Army Materiel Command's commander Gen. Dennis Via felt Thursday morning's assembled runners and walkers in the Exchange parking lot needed a little more motivation.
So he had them clap along to another round of Pharrell's "Happy" sung by Staff Sgt. Richard Scarlett of the AMC Band's Sonic Fusion.
That fired up the estimated 400 participants in Team Redstone's second annual Army birthday run. The event was rescheduled after it was canceled June 10 because of the threat of thunderstorms.
"We're celebrating the 239th birthday of the United States Army, an institution as old as the nation itself, that's defended the freedoms that we all hold dear," Via said. "So celebrate this great day, look back and reflect on your career. And think about everything this Army has done for this great nation."
Sgt. Maj. William Lewis, AMC's operations and logistics sergeant major, organized the event, a postwide unit formation 5K run/2.2K walk, and served as master of ceremonies.
"I appreciate the good turnout, Team Redstone," Lewis said. This was his last Army birthday celebration at Redstone as he completes his 24-month tour. **contributed by By SKIP VAUGHN
