FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 4, 2014) -- The 11th Engineer Battalion's Team A went undefeated during the Commander's Cup Preseason Softball Tournament and went on to claim the championship title May 27 at Gowdy Field. The Engineers defeated 3rd Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, 8-3.
The Engineers took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after allowing 3-16 CAV only one hit in four at bats in the inning.
3-16 CAV tied the game 3-3 in the bottom half of the second inning partially due to an error, which allowed two runners to advance while scoring one run.
The Engineer defense shut out 3-16 CAV the rest of the way while collecting one run in the third inning, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and a final run in the seventh inning for the win.
Runs were hard to come by for both teams with pop flys accounting for 23 outs.
Engineers' coach, George Ruiz, said his team could have cut down on fly balls, even with his long distance hitters.
"We didn't play up to our potential, but we hung in there," 3-16 CAV assistant coach Ryan Gillaspy, said.
Gillaspy said he is still confident the team will do well in the upcoming season.
"I think we will be in a good spot going forward, he said. "A lot of the guys are still trying to click together. But I think we will be fine throughout the rest of the season. We did well all preseason, this last game - you win' em, you lose' em."
Ruiz said he was also confident about the upcoming season.
"By winning the preseason, that shows exactly how good we are," he said. "It's a positive going into the season."
