ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- The U.S. flag served as a teaching tool for several local Cub Scouts from Davenport.
Scouts with Cub Scout Pack 2664 participated in flag-folding duties with Soldiers from First Army during a retreat ceremony on May 20. Scouts were able to earn a merit badge for their service.
Retreat ceremonies are conducted daily on U.S. military installations, signaling the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the U.S. flag.
John Scordato, Cub Scouts Pack Leader, Pack 2664, in Davenport, thanked First Army and its Soldiers for their time.
"This is our fourth year doing this and it's always memorable," he said. "It's great for the scouts to interact with the Soldiers. I think it's memorable for the Soldiers as well."
The Davenport scouts practiced with "First in Deed" Soldiers for 45 minutes before participating in the actual ceremony that is conducted at 5 p.m. each day.
Master Sgt. Fernando Navarrete served as the noncommissioned officer in charge of First Army's flag detail.
"It was time well spent with the Cub Scouts," he said. "It was great to be out here with them."
Navarrete also presented the scouts with a plaque signifying all their hard work and dedication.
First Army previously helped a Cub Scout pack earn its badges in September 2013.
First Army mobilizes, trains, deploys and demobilizes all Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve forces throughout the continental United States, providing trained and ready forces for diverse missions worldwide. First Army is comprised of two divisions: First Army Division East, located at Fort Meade, Md., and First Army Division West, located at Fort Hood, Texas.
