CAMP HUMPHREYS -- Hundreds of community members and their children turned out for the various events at the Earth Day Eggstravaganza, in the vicinity of Soldier Field, April 30.
The event had a little bit of everything for the entire community. It opened with a 5K and Kid's 1-mile run and was followed by Earth Day activities and the Eggstravaganza.
The best overall 5K finish was turned in by Benjamin Joslin, a captain assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, with a time of 18 minutes, 47 seconds. Finishing second was Pfc. Ryan Britinger, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 304th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, with a time of 18:55. The top overall finisher women's finisher was Imma Romano, with a time of 23:33. Second place went to Kaylee Spielman, a freshman at Humphreys Middle/High School, at 24:08.
Area III Sports Director Lonnie Herring said that the community was celebrating many things with the run and event.
"This run is celebrating a lot of things," he said. "This run was used to bring awareness to the themes around sexual assault, celebrating the Month of the Military Child, and bringing awareness to environmental issues."
Following the run, most of participants collected their green t-shirt and then joined the Eggstravaganza and Earth Day festivities. On Soldier Field, activities such as basketball, birdseed making, face painting, bouncers kept the children busy until it was time for the Eggstravaganza.
The egg hunt was divided up into three different age brackets -- 0-3, 4-6 and 7-10.
Like many of the children in attendance, Abigail Adams, the daughter of Melissa and Staff Sgt. David Adams, assigned to the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, said she got about "20 or 30 eggs, and I think it was fun."
Melissa added, "I thought it is great program for kids. I think it gives them something to look forward to during the year when they come here and play with each other in the bouncy house and stuff like that."
