JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO (February 11, 2014) - - The Army recognized the artistic eye of enlisted Soldiers, commissioned officers and civilians alike for their simple and true captures of garrison life around the world in the 2013 Army Digital Photography Contest.

The U.S. Army Installation Management Command awarded recognition and prizes to contestants for their photo entries in categories such as Animals, Design Elements, Digital Darkroom, Military Life, Nature/Landscapes, People and Still Life.

Among those recognized were first place winners Lt. Col. Kim Chaney from Fort Knox, Ky. for "Florida Condos;" family member Jessica Fuller from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich. for "Intently She Watches;" family member Kathryn Greves from Fort Polk, La. for "Animals of Louisiana 1;" family member Kimberly Kendall from Fort Jackson, S.C. for "Winter Sunset at Valley View;" Sgt. 1st Class Oliver Kirkham from Torii Station, Japan for "Roller Derby Dispersion;" family member Virginia Kozak from Stuttgart, Germany for "Sweet Dreams;" Civilian Rebecca Mastrian from Fort Campbell, Ky. for "The Red Reflection;" Maj. Eric Megerdoomian from Fort Leavenworth, Kan. for "The Pastor;" Staff Sgt. Ian Mosher from Hohenfels, Germany for "Broke Baby;" Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra from Grafenwoehr, Germany for "Morning Fog;" Maj. Robert Shaw from Camp Zama, Japan for "Conflict;" DoD employee Jessica St. Clair from Aberdeen, Md. for "US 4EVR;" DoD family member Samara Stirneman from Yongsan, Korea for "Echoeing Footsteps;" and Sgt. Philip Velez from Presidio of Monterey, Calif. for "3.14."

Some contest entrants showed their talent by winning in more than one category.

Maj. Robert Shaw, a multiple category winner from the 2012 contest, won in five categories all together this year. Besides his 1st and 2nd place awards in Animals, he also received two 3rd place awards in Still Life and Digital Design, plus an honorable mention in Design Elements.

There were four photographers who won three awards this year. Military family member Kimberly Kendall from Fort Jackson, S.C. not only won a 1st place finish in Nature/Landscapes, but also 3rd place in Animals and an honorable mention in the Still Life category. Maj. Jared Lenz from Stuttgart, Germany won 2nd and two 3rd place finishes in Still Life, People and Design Elements respectively. Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra from Grafenwoehr, Germany, besides his 1st place finish in Nature/Landscapes, won honorable mentions in Still Life and Digital Darkroom. Capt. Garrett Wood from Fort Lee, Va. won 2nd place for Digital Darkroom and two honorable mentions for People and Nature/Landscapes.

Several photographers won two awards. Military family member Laura Castro from Stuttgart, Germany won honorable mention in the People and Digital Darkroom categories. Capt. Frederick Dequina from Fort Lee, Va. won 2nd place in People and 3rd place in Military Life. Sgt. Arturo Guzman from the Army National Guard won 2nd place twice in Still Life and Military Life. Maj. Darrell Reamer from Camp Zama, Japan won honorable mentions in Nature/Landscapes and Design. In addition to his 1st place win in the Military Life category, Sgt. Philip Velez from Presidio of Monterey, Calif., scored an honorable mention in the Animals category. Military family member Cara Smith from Stuttgart, Germany won 2nd and 3rd place for Animals and Still Life, respectively. Staff Sgt. Sharilyn Wells from Fort Bragg, N.C. won honorable mentions in Military Life and Digital Darkroom.

The annual Army Digital Photography Contest allows entries from contestants in two divisions: active-duty personnel and other Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons.
