ACS helps Soldiers, Families 'acclimate' to military life

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 22, 2014) -- The new couponing group, hosted by Army Community Service, is the result of interest from the Fort Benning community. And it's one of several new opportunities the Army Community Service is offering this year, said Nicole Heller, outreach coordinator. From social groups such as the coupon swap to classes, ACS has something for everyone.

"It's a service that's provided to (Soldiers and Families) from the Army," Heller said. "It allows them to network with people so they can meet people in the same situation as them. It allows them to gain skills and tools that will be helpful to them … we're trying to build self-reliant and resilient Families."

Classes include employment and financial readiness, parenting classes, resiliency classes and social gatherings. The classes provide numerous life skills, she said, such as the employment readiness classes, which are perfect for military spouses. There are listings of job openings on and off-post that are updated every Monday. And the classes include resume building and navigating federal job websites.

The classes are meant to help Soldiers and their Families acclimate to the military life and the Fort Benning community, Heller said. An example is the Army Family Team Building classes, which are meant to be the "Army 101" for those new to the military.

"Our goal is to help our Soldiers and Families with what they need," she said. "We're here for them. They should come (and use) us and reap all the benefits the Army has provided for them."
