VILSECK, Germany -- Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment were welcomed home from a deployment to Afghanistan by friends and family, here, Nov. 23.
"We held together as a team--24-7 we were together and it was a good experience," said 1st Lt. Jefferson Thondique, a member of 1st Squadron. "What I learned in Afghanistan is brotherhood. We got to the point where we got to know each other pretty well and we had each other's backs."
This contingent was just the first wave of Soldiers to return home from Afghanistan. The rest of 1st Squadron is scheduled to return to Germany between now and the end of January.
"It's good to be back in Germany, get to see some friends that didn't go downrange with us," Sgt. Kevin M. Halverson, a medical advisor for Security Forces Advise and Assist Team, 2nd CR. "In Afghanistan, you don't have the time for yourself. I'm excited to just enjoy some peace and quiet."
The unit was partnered with, mentored and assisted the Afghan National Army and Police to build their capacities and capabilities. This partnership gives the Afghan forces the tools to execute their own security operations in their transition to independent security and governance.
