SCHWEINFURT, Germany (Nov. 6, 2013) -- Armed Forces Network radio is a slice of home for many Americans living overseas. Hearing familiar music coupled with American radio programming makes for comfortable listening. But where does it come from?
AFN Bavaria radio serves all military bases in the Franconian footprint through two programs, AFN the Eagle and AFN Power Network. Both provide a diverse variety in music, news and current talk radio programming. The Eagle, which offers live local broadcasts, is produced and transmitted from Rose Barracks in Vilseck, Germany, said Sgt. First Class Jason Allgood, AFN Bavaria station manager.
The signal is then transmitted from the satellite in Vilseck and sent to the radio tower in Schweinfurt, which is located at the Directorate of Public Works compound near the MP station. A transmitter on the tower turns the signal into FM/AM radio frequencies, allowing community members to access AFN radio, Allgood said.
