Fort Benning to host annual Oktoberfest

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 9, 2013) -- You can throw back a beer, big deal. Can you throw a whole keg?

This year's Oktoberfest at Uchee Creek will feature a keg tossing competition, a Dachshund Derby and stein hoisting contests. So when your dogs get tired, take a break and raise a glass of your favorite German brew … and hold it there just as long as you can.

The funs starts at 4 p.m. Oct. 25 and ends at 10 p.m. The day includes fun for the kids, with inflatables and a petting zoo, for adults, the ceremonial keg tapping started at 6 p.m., performances by the Sonnenschein Express and the Gootman Band, stein hoisting contests and more.

Saturday starts with the annual Oktoberfest 10K Cross Country Run and 5K Volksmarch. These events start at 8 a.m. Oct. 26 at Uchee Creek. The Volksmarch is free and stroller friendly. Register for $25 until Oct. 22 at Smith Fitness Center or www.active.com. After Oct. 22, the fee increases to $35. The first 50 to register will receive a free T-shirt. Saturday events also include canine competitions (the Dachshund Derby, Best Dressed, Doggie Doppelgangers and Top Dog trick), hay rides, pony rides, petting zoo, inflatables, crafts, boat rides and pumpkin patch for the kids; a keg tossing competition, dancing and more music by the Sonnenschein Express, Gootman band and the MCoE Band. We tap out at 10 p.m.

Sunday activities, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., include a chili cook-off, performances by the SKIES Dance Team and more children's activities.

Safety Cab will offer free rides home on Fort Benning and in Columbus, Phenix City and Fort Mitchell. For a ride, call 706-326-3027. Shuttle service will be available to and from Oktoberfest on post.

Vendors accept only tokens for the purchase of food. Rides and games are free. Tokens, $1 each, are available before the event at MWR headquarters, Building 2783 on Eckel Avenue, or at token trailers on site. Unused tokens can be redeemed on site for full value.
