BAMBERG, Germany (Sept. 10, 2013) -- Bamberg's traditional Fall Fest, or "Herbstplaerrer," will open Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. and will last through Oct. 20. For the first time, the Plaerrer Fest will be held on U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg grounds.
"The Americans were very cooperative," said Bamberg's lord mayor, Andreas Starke, since the former location close to the park and ride garage was no longer available. The 54th Engineer Battalion cleared their motor pool at Zollner Strasse to allow the fest workers access to set up their carnival rides and booths.
"We are happy to bring this traditional fest to the garrison area. This way our Soldiers and Families can easily join the fun; it's within walking distance for our entire community," said garrison commander Lt. Col. Michelle L. Bienias.
The fest opens Oct. 12 and Oct. 14 through 19 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 13 and 20 at 1 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m. Oct. 12, 18 and 19, and closes 9 p.m. all other days. All rides will be one euro from 3 to 4 p.m. opening day. Oct. 16 is family day, and all rides will be at least 30 percent off. The traditional fireworks go off Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m.
This year's main attractions will be the Ferris wheel, the "star dancer", the bumper cars, the huge swing time ride and many other carnival rides for all ages. Pizza, hamburgers, Hungarian fried bread "langos" and typical Franconian food will be available.
Due to security regulations, there will be no direct entry or exit to the remaining garrison area. Guests will have to leave post and enter the fest site from Zollner Strasse.
The next spring fest in 2014 is also scheduled to take place in the same location.
