Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day celebrates the accomplishments of the American worker and their profound impact in the development of our Nation. It is a day where we as Americans can truly appreciate how far we have come as a country. Over the years, much of the original significance of the Labor Day holiday has faded from our national consciousness. While many of us welcome the long weekend as a reprieve from work, we often forget that it is also a celebration of the American workforce. As you contemplate your activities for this upcoming holiday weekend, please take a moment to remember all who have helped us achieve the world-class status our Nation enjoys today.
The upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend signals the end of the "101 Critical Days of Summer" and for many of us the unofficial end to the summer season. It provides that last chance to fire up the barbecue grill, take one more short vacation, or just relax before summer turns into autumn. Unfortunately, the Labor Day weekend is often spoiled by accidents. I ask that you take a little extra time in your holiday preparation to think about your safety and the safety of your loved ones.
Even with the advances in vehicles and their myriad safety features, driving is still one of the most dangerous activities in the United States; unfortunately, even more so during holiday weekends. If you plan to travel, prepare both yourself and your vehicle for the journey ahead. Plan your route; allow extra time for your trip taking into account increased traffic on the roads; and stop periodically to rest. Don't drink and drive. Be aware of the potential hazards and drive sensibly and defensively. And remember to use your safety belt and insist that your passengers use theirs.
Continued warm weather will encourage many to participate in popular outdoor activities such as hiking, playing softball, or barbecuing. Practicing good risk management techniques is a sure way to have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the AMC Family for your continued hard work, dedication, and contributions in providing advanced equipment and materiel solutions for our deployed men and women each day. The months that lie ahead for AMC, as well as our country, are very important. One way we can all contribute to ensuring AMC success is enjoying an accident free weekend and return to work uninjured, renewed, and ready to meet the challenges ahead.
Have a safe Labor Day weekend.
