ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- D. Scott Welker, deputy to the commander, U.S. Army Sustainment Command, briefed Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek, director, Defense Logistics Agency, Fort Belvoir, Va., Aug. 26 here at the command's headquarters.

Harnitchek received an "Operation Overview" of ASC. The command is the operational arm of its higher headquarters, Army Materiel Command, Huntsville, Ala.

"I see what you guys do in the theater … it's just awesome," Harnitchek said, speaking of the command's Army Field Support Brigades.

The Army Sustainment Command supports Army and joint forces in support of the combat commanders around the world.

Accompanying him was Jim McClaugherty, deputy commander, DLA Land & Maritime, and Guy Beougher, executive director, Support, DLA Logistics Operations.

The group also visited and received briefings from the Joint Munitions Command, Joint Manufacturing & Technology Center, and Army Contracting Command-Rock Island.

Harnitchek has been leading DLA since November 2011. DLA provides the armed forces and other federal agencies with a variety of logistics, acquisition and technical services in peace and war. These services include logistics information, materiel management, procurement, warehousing and distribution of spare parts, food, clothing, medical supplies and fuel, reutilization of surplus military materiel and document automation and production.

DLA's global mission is performed by nearly 27,000 civilian and military personnel.
