REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- Maj. Gen. Darrell Williams, chief of staff of the Army Materiel Command served as the guest speaker of a recent Sexual Harassment Assault/Response and Prevention Mobile Training Team instruction hosted here, July 25.
"Our commanding general, Gen. Dennis Via is totally committed to our SHARP effort. Both here in the headquarters and across our global command," Williams asserted. "He is holding leaders at every level accountable for eliminating harassment and assault."
To increase effectiveness in addressing sexual assault, Army leaders are aggressively enforcing the Army's Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program, or SHARP, and AMC is doing the same by sending personnel to an 80 hour certification course to become Victim Advocates and Sexual Assault Response Coordinators.
The instruction lasted from July 15-30, and participants were required to be sergeant first class or above, major or above, chief warrant officer three or above, or GS-11 or above and undergo a background check.
"We hope that by training leaders in each command, we will have the ability to foster cultural change," said Master Sgt. Andrew Ruffin, equal opportunity officer and SHARP program manager under the office of the Diversity and Leadership at AMC.
"As part of taking care of our Soldiers, civilians, families and contractors, we must continue to enforce a zero tolerance policy on sexual harassment and sexual assault within our ranks. This behavior is simply unacceptable," Williams concluded.
Following training participants will be able to effectively conduct SHARP training, maintain sexual harassment complaints and cases, and maintain a contact with liaisons in the medical, legal, law enforcement, chaplain, and investigation fields.
