YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- A world-renowned 10-Ball billiards champion showcased her talents to the military community of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, July 17.
Gayoung Kim, nicknamed the 'Little Devil Girl, is a strong supporter of service members, families and civilians working in Korea.
"What I felt here is hospitality," Kim said. "Many people in this large garrison have shown a welcoming attitude from the moment I arrived here. It was a pleasurable experience to me, and I will gladly visit again if I get a chance to do so."
Kim performed some trick shots, and played a few challenge matches with her lucky fans who were chosen by drawing, and had photo and autograph session with attendees.
The Little Devil Girl showed no mercy as she defeated all her lucky challengers. But she also taught the basic skills of billiard to a student who never played billiards before.
"Learning from a world champion was a cool experience," said Jason Hyde, the student who Kim taught. "Before tonight, I was not interested much in billiards. However, I did know Kim, and now that I have met her, I suppose I will be a fan of her. Her manner was great and I liked the way she enjoyed playing games."
Kim started playing billiards at the age of twelve, and was motivated by her father who ran a billiard club. Registering as a professional player in 1996, Kim was able to promote herself to the public by showing great results.
"Kim is an idol for me," said Andrew Adams, an attendee who was looking forward to Kim's visit for weeks. "She is a woman who keeps pushing toward her goal."
Kim currently ranks second in the Women's Professional Billiard Association ranking system. Her achievements include the 2009 U.S. Open nine-ball championship win; 2011 WPBA tour championship win; 2012 world ten ball championship win; 2013 WPBA masters' cup win; and the 2009 and 2011 WPBA number 1 ranking.
