OKINAWA, Japan (July 18, 2013) -- Electronic books, also known as eBooks, are now available for free download through the Torii Station library.

Anyone who is already registered, or who is eligible to register, with the Torii Station library can now conveniently have access to thousands of free electronic books.

"There's a lot of value here as people get away from using traditional printed library material and start going toward using digital media on various electronic devices. You can access books 24-hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection," said Casey Grimmer, Torii Station Librarian.

There are several online retail sites for purchasing and downloading digital media, however, there is one significant difference between purchasing an eBook or downloading a free eBook through the library: A purchased book is yours to keep indefinitely while an eBook borrowed from the online library can only be checked out for two weeks. It has to be "returned" just like hard copy books you check out from the library.

It's easy to get started. The first step is to stop by the library, register for an account and get a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that will allow you to access the online library. You will then be able to log onto http://mylibraryus.armybiznet.com/search and have immediate access to thousands of titles to download free of charge.

Once you access the website's home page, click on "eResources/Research" then scroll down to "Army Digital Media Library (Overdrive.) The website is user friendly and includes a How To Guide and Quickstart to help you get started.

The online library only contains one copy of each eBook available for check out. Once you choose the eBook you want, click on "Borrow" if it is available. If it's already checked out, you can place a hold on it and you will receive an email notice when it becomes available. If you wish to keep your selection beyond the 2-week check out limit, you can re-check it out if no one has placed a hold on it.

"Electronic books and other digital media can be listened to on your iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android, Kindle, Nook, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Sony Reader or anything you can listen to a podcast on after being downloaded. Each eBook reader platform differs slightly, so depending on the platform you choose, you may need to install other software such as Adobe Digital Editions or the Overdrive Media Console," said Grimmer.

The online library has eBooks in every category from cooking, history, language, pets, romance, travel and much more. There is also an impressive eMusic selection that includes rock, pop, hip hop and country, and a large eVideo section that includes the latest action films, drama, classic, TV series, horror, thrillers, foreign films and more.
