HONOLULU, Hawaii--For more than four days neighbors heard the cries of a dog stuck on the hillside of the Aliamanu Military Reservation; then one Command Sgt. Maj. and three scouts from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division took action and rescued it.

After the dog spent several hot days and rain filled nights in the elements howling for help, Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco, 325th Brigade Support Battalion, "Mustangs", 3rd BCT, 25th ID and his wife Divina who are residents of AMR, decided to do something.

"The dog sounded like it was in distress and it was distressing us," said Rocco's spouse.

They then hiked up the steep hillside near their home and found the trapped pooch and called the local authorities didn't have the necessary equipment needed to rescue the dog.

"They pretty much gave up on it," said Rocco, but he was not going to take no for an answer. He called Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey D. Sweezer, senior enlisted leader of the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment who sent three of his best scouts down to do the job.

Sgt. 1st Class Tyler M. Dennee, Staff Sgt. Mark Roper, and Sgt. Cody Graves, infantryman, Scout Platoon, 2-35 Inf., 3rd BCT, 25th ID, all air assault qualified, met Rocco at his house with their equipment to get started.

"We figured that America needed us, so we repelled off the rock face to get the dog." said Dennee. "It took us about an hour from the time we got on site to rescue the dog, but hardest part was getting him to come to us, you could tell he was very scared and tired."

He explained how it was more than just a few scouts who helped out. "There was a lot of help from our Charlie Company who gave us the repelling equipment we needed and from my PL [Platoon Leader] who allowed me to have the time to set aside from our military focused mission to assist the community."

The scouts decided to name the dog "Ranger" before handing him over to the proper authorities for further care. He is now with the Hawaiian Humane Society and available for adoption.

Dennee said, " at the end of the day, it was pretty rewarding knowing that the neighborhood didn't have to worry about the dog being stuck outside anymore, the animal was safe and that made it worthwhile."
