1987: First black commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy

General Ward

Gorden made history becoming the 61st commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He also graduated the academy with a degree in engineering and has a master's degree in Spanish from Middlebury College. Gorden served 34 years in the U.S. Army.
