FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (Sept. 20, 2012) -- Fort Meade will host a Community Prescription-Drug Take Back Day on Sept. 29 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Exchange.

The event is in support of National Drug Take Back Day and sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Army Substance Abuse Program staff, in conjunction with the Fort Meade Pharmacy and the Directorate of Emergency Services, will collect unneeded, unused and expired medication.

In conjunction with Take Back Day, the ASAP office will accept unused prescription pills on Tuesday outside McGill Training Center and Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. outside the pharmacy parking lot.

This is an opportunity for the community to protect the environment. Unused portions must be disposed of properly to avoid harm to wildlife, pets and people.

Follow your prescriber's instructions and use all medications as instructed. If you do not use all of your prescribed or over-the-counter medication, two steps can prevent a huge impact on the environment:

* Do not flush unused medications and do not pour them down a sink or drain.

* To dispose unused medication in household trash, pour medication into a sealable plastic bag. If medication is a solid such as a pill or liquid capsule, add water to dissolve it.

Add kitty litter, sawdust or coffee grounds (or any material that mixes with the medication and makes it less appealing for pets and children to eat) in the plastic bag.

Seal the plastic bag and put it in the trash.

Remove and destroy all identifying personal information (prescription label) from all medication containers before recycling them or throwing them away.
