FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Three noncommissioned officers were inducted into the prestigious Sgt. Audie Murphy Club, during an induction ceremony in Fitch Auditorium, Alvarado Hall on Aug. 11. The three men, Sgt. 1st Class Jerrod Harbert of Company B, Sgt. 1st Class Charles Warner of Company C and Sgt. 1st Class Demtric Williams of Company B are all members of the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade, U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence.

Sgt. Audie Murphy is hailed as the greatest combat Soldier in the 234-year history of the United States. He spent roughly 400 days on the front lines and earned 33 military awards, citations and decorations. These include every medal for valor that America awards, as well as three French and one Belgian medal. He earned a battlefield commission for his courage and leadership ability.

The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club is a private U.S. Army organization for enlisted noncommissioned officers only. Those NCOs whose leadership achievements and performance merit special recognition may possibly earn the reward of membership. Members must " ... exemplify leadership characterized by personal concern for the needs, training, development, and welfare of Soldiers and concern for families of Soldiers," as stated in U.S. Army Forces Command Regulation 600-8, paragraph 1.

If an NCO meets these pre-requisites, the Soldier may then be recommended by his noncommissioned officer chain-of-command to participate in the rigorous board examination process, according to the SAMC Web site, http://www.audiemurphy.com/samc.htm.

During the same ceremony, Veronica Harbert, was presented with the Margaret C. Corbin Award. Corbin was recognized for her bravery as she fought alongside her husband during the Revolutionary War and was the first woman to receive a pension ("half the pay and allowances of a Soldier in service" from the United States government as a disabled Soldier), according to http://www.distinguishedwomen.com/biographies/corbin.html.

Veronica, the wife of SAMC inductee Harbert, received the Corbin award in recognition of her many past and present Army-related volunteer hours for various organizations to which she continues to donate her time and make a difference to Fort Huachuca.

The ceremony included a Soldier's skit, a presentation of the NCO Creed and the Sgt. Audie Murphy story, and a presentation of medallions and awards. Following remarks by the guest speaker, Sgt. Maj. Robert Klein, Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center, and a rendition of "The Dogface Soldier," the ceremony concluded with the "The Army Song," with music performed by the 62nd Army Band.
