DoD announces 1st Cav. Div. units' Afghanistan Deployment

FORT HOOD, Texas - The Department of Defense announced today the 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters and the division's Air Cavalry Brigade will deploy in spring 2011 as part of upcoming rotations of forces operating in Afghanistan.
This scheduled deployment involves approximately 700 personnel on the division headquarters staff and approximately 2,700 in the Air Cavalry Brigade.
Previously, the division headquarters and the Air Cavalry Brigade deployed to Iraq three times since 2003. This scheduled deployment is both units' first rotation to Afghanistan.
"America's First Team has answered the Nation's call at various times and locations throughout our country's history, and now we are ready to do so in Afghanistan," said Maj. Gen. Dan Allyn, Commanding General, 1st Cavalry Division. "We are ready to bring our resources and experiences to bear to accomplish our military objectives and continue the legacy of service of America's First Team."
The Division Headquarters and Air Cavalry Brigade will work with Afghan officials and NATO forces to support the Government of Afghanistan, perform counter-insurgency operations, assist with reconstruction, and train and equip the Afghan national security forces.
