USNS Pomeroy Ensures Rapid Response
The USNS Pomeroy is a large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off, ship owned and operated by the Military Sealift Command, on behalf of the Army, which uses the vessel to preposition combat-ready equipment. The ship contains 393,000 square feet of storage space on six decks, with space to lash down tanks, helicopters, trucks and other large vehicles. The vessel is operated by about 30 contractors employed by the MSC, with several Honeywell Technology contractors who maintain the equipment while it\'s out to sea. The Pomeroy was in port Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 to download its cargo before undergoing its own inspection. The equipment will be made ready in approximately 15 weeks; then the next prepositioning ship comes to Charleston for uploading and travel to a pre-determined location, ready for a military or humanitarian crisis.
