Soldier honored for bravery and sacrifice
Spc. Lapatrick Black makes a brief statement after receiving a Purple Heart Medal during a ceremony Sept. 17 at the Fort Eustis Club. Black was awarded the Purple Heart for his brave service in Operation Iraqi Freedom by Fort Eustis Commander Brig. Gen. Brian R. Layer. Layer also honored Black with the Honorable Order of St. Christopher Medal, presented to individuals whose actions and accomplishments exemplify the dignity and spirit of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of tranporters. In a brief speech, Layer praised Black's valor. "As Soldiers, we're bigger than the guns we carry. What makes us bigger is what we believe in, our commitment and our hearts. Although I'm sure this is an award your parents hoped you'd never receive, you are a great example of courage, duty and selfless service."
