FORT STORY, Va. (September 3, 2009) -- The Soldiers of the 82nd Quartermaster Detachment, 1208th QM Company, 370th QM Battalion at Fort Lee drenched the competition and surfaced as champions of the 2009 U.S. Army Forces Command Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit Rodeo at the U.S. Army Coastal Water Purification Training Center, Fort Story Aug. 23 through 29.

About 40 Soldiers from Army active-duty, Reserve and Guard units throughout the United States competed in the week-long event on Omaha Beach for a chance to win the Sgt. Major John C. Marigliano Award of Excellence.

The competition comprised 10 lanes, or modules ,that put the skills, readiness and proficiency of the water purification specialists to the test. Lanes training techniques are used to test Soldiers and leaders on a series of selective tasks in a specific environment.

The competition began with a four-hour written examination that tested the Soldiers' ability to research information using various manuals and guides. Following the written examination, the Soldiers assembled into eight teams consisting of one noncommissioned officer and four Soldiers before moving forward into lanes two through 10 consisting of ground reconnaissance for suitable water sources, set-up and operation of the 3,000-gallon, 12-filter Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Units, and potable water storage and distribution.

Individual winners with the highest written examination scores were Pvt. Larry Williams, 82nd QM Det., 1208th QM Co., 370th QM Bn., and Spc. William King of the 288th QM Co., U.S. Army Reserves in Corpus Christi, Texas.
