Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero
Major General Barbero was commissioned in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1976. He is also a graduate of the Command and General Staff Course, the Advance Military Studies Program (SAMS) and the National War College. As an Infantry officer, MG Barbero has served in a variety of tactical assignments in Mechanized, Light and Air Assault Infantry units. He has served in the 1st Cavalry Division, 2d Infantry Division, two tours in the101st Airborne Division (AASLT), the 7th Infantry Division, the 10th Mountain Division and the 4th Infantry Division. MG Barbero has extensive experience as an Operations Officer, serving as the S3 of two separate Infantry Battalions and as the S3 of an Infantry Brigade. He has also served as the Chief of Current Operations at Division level, and as the Deputy Director for Regional Operations, J3, the Joint Staff. Most recently, MG Barbero served 16 months in Baghdad, as the CJ3 of Multi National Forces - Iraq (MNF-I). MG Barbero has commanded the 3d Battalion 187th Infantry Battalion, the 2d Brigade 10th Mountain Division, and the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and Fort Polk. He has also served as the Executive Assistant to the Commander of Joint Forces Command/Supreme Commander Atlantic and as the III Corps Chief of Staff. He has participated in Operation JUST CAUSE, and has served two tours in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as the Assistant Division Commander (Operations) of the 4th Infantry Division and as the MNF-I CJ3. He assumed command of the United States Army Infantry Center and School on 18 November 2008. MG Barbero grew up in an Army family, his father is a distinguished veteran of World War II and a retired Colonel. He is married to the former Linda Nadig of Tigard, Oregon. They have one daughter, Emily, who recently graduated with honors from Xavier University and who resides and works in Northern Virginia.
