PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command selected its newest member for the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club Aug. 19 at the command's headquarters here.

The newest member of the SMDC Sergeant Audie Murphy Club is Staff Sgt. Adam J. Johnson with Company C, 53rd Signal Battalion from Landstuhl, Germany.

SAMC is an important part of the USASMDC/ARSTRAT command sergeant major's noncommissioned officer development program. It provides special recognition to an elite group of NCOs who have demonstrated performance and inherent leadership qualities and abilities characterized by those of highly decorated World War II veteran Sgt. Audie Murphy.

As a squad leader, Murphy consistently demonstrated the highest quality of leadership, professionalism and regard for the welfare of his Soldiers. He was the most decorated American combat Soldier of World War II. Murphy received every decoration for valor offered by the United States and an additional five presented to him by France and Belgium.

"The SAMC provides an organization with a subject matter expert -- an individual who can go back to his organization and help mentor younger individuals," said Command Sgt. Maj. Jerome Wiggins, SMDC command sergeant major. "This particular noncommissioned officer possesses all the desirable traits, competencies and attributes associated with being a professional noncommissioned officer and is inducted into the prestigious organization by virtue of possessing those traits. In other words you get a subject matter expert in your organization."

Johnson will receive a certificate and a medallion during an official induction ceremony at a later date.
