PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (Feb. 24, 2015) -- Army Researchers are taking advantage of professional development sessions to advance knowledge.

Anthony Ur, an animation technology lead, demonstrated the capabilities of the Microsoft Kinect Feb. 11 during Picatinny Arsenal's "Lunch and Learn" series. Ur is with the arsenal's Gaming Interactive and Multimedia Branch and presented on the behalf of the Organization for Innovation Strategy, an innovation group at the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, or ARDEC.

The Kinect was originally developed for use with the Microsoft Xbox 360 and intended as a gaming apparatus. However, the Kinect's infrared depth camera makes it a suitable device for entry-level, 3-D scanning.

"Lunch and Learn" events focus on introducing the ARDEC workforce to Picatinny's innovative facilities and capabilities as well as showcase the arsenal's 3-D printing and scanning abilities. The events were held every Wednesday from Feb. 4 to Feb. 18, and consisted of a tour as well as interactive discussions. Facilities that participants toured include the Innovation Headquarters, Gaming Innovation Lab and the Innovation Materials Hub.

The innovation group aims to provide innovation tools and services to ARDEC leadership for strategic planning and organizational growth while providing tools and services to the ARDEC workforce to support the development of innovative products for the warfighter.

The Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness--technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection and sustainment--to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
