ANSBACH, Germany (April 17, 2014) - U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach hosted Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell Jr., commanding general of U.S. Army Europe, and Kathleen Marin, Installation Management Command Europe region director, Command Sgt. Maj. Romeo Montez III, IMCOM-E command sergeant major, and their spouses during a daylong trip here April 15.
The USAG Ansbach garrison command team - Col. Christopher Benson, Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Kiefer and Kevin Griess - accompanied Campbell, Marin and Montez as they toured several kasernes in the garrison's footprint.
Their first stop was Urlas, a former training area that's now home to a new post exchange, commissary, automotive skills center and many other amenities. They also saw the construction progress on the future consolidated medical and dental clinic as well as the housing area and the state-of-the-art, IMCOM-E Fire Fighting Training Center.
Next, the official party stopped at Katterbach Kaserne and toured the new, still-under-construction physical fitness center. Campbell, Marin and Montez also had the opportunity to eat lunch with Soldiers from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. Sexual assault prevention was the topic of discussion during the luncheon as the visit coincided with the garrison's Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention, or SHARP, Stand Down day.
Campbell, Marin and Montez observed SHARP training for newly assigned Soldiers during their visit to the inprocessing training center.
Campbell offered his thoughts to the group on how to stop sexual assault.
"We joined the Army for different reasons, but now we're all in the big Army family," Campbell said. "Sexual assault and sexual harassment erodes the family connection. There is room for individual performance, but we succeed as teams. Think about sexual assault and sexual harassment as the destruction of the team.
"Being a Soldier is the most noble and honorable thing you can do; let's keep it that way," Campbell continued. "We will hold you accountable for your behavior. The climate we want is one where you can be the leader and Soldier you want to be. But we won't get there if we don't win the SHARP fight."
Simultaneously during Campbell, Marin and Montez' tour, their spouses - Ann Campbell, Stephen Marin and Charlotte Montez respectively - met with garrison and 12th CAB senior spouses and discussed family readiness, spouse sponsorship and what type of information venues the garrison has available to assist families with the transition of overseas Army life.
The culminating event of the tour was a stop at the new Child, Youth and School Services complex at Katterbach. There, the entourage walked through the Child Development Center and School Age Center areas and saw the array of care that is available to community members.
