Final Darmstadt 9/11 Ceremony
DARMSTADT, Germany - Lt. Col. Dan McFarland, commander of the 2nd Military Intelligence Battalion, salutes and Johann Partsch, Darmstadt city Stadtrat (city council member) bows his head in respect after laying a wreath at the plaque remembering the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The ceremony was the last joint German-American observance of 9/11 and of the World War II 1944 bombing raid that virtually destroyed this city's center, killing 12,000 people. All operations of U.S. Army Garrison Darmstadt officially cease Sept. 30, with a transition team preparing its installations for turnover to the German government. The plaque was donated by the citizens of Darmstadt.
