FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 19, 2014) -- The Equipment Checkout Center offers ready-to-rent equipment for the Fort Benning community. The center, located behind the movie theater on Gillespie Street, has items for outdoor hobbyists, event planning and everyday use such as camping equipment, gardening equipment and party equipment.
It's a one-stop-shop for recreational items, said Brittany Beadle, Outdoor Recreation manager. Renting is open to active-duty Soldiers, their Family members, Department of Defense civilians and Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons.

New items include a motor home for those who don't have the right kind of vehicle to pull a camper, which is also available to rent.

"We try to get Soldiers and their Families out into the outdoors instead of playing video games," Beadle said. "We try to help them acquire the skills and the equipment they need to get outside."

If you are considering a new outdoor hobby, staff at the center will go over how to operate equipment and stay safe, she said. It's better to rent equipment than buy -- and you can rent for cheaper than what you might find off post.

Those interested in renting can go to the office or call over the phone, Beadle said. You are able to reserve an item up to 60 days in advance and pay a first day rental fee -- paying the rest of it when you come to pick up the item.

Most items available do not need any special license with exception of the motor home and boats. For the motor home, you must be at least 25 years old with a valid drivers license. And, in order to rent the boat, you must have a boater safety license.

If you are looking for an item but the center doesn't have it, Beadle said the center would acquire it. The center also offers locker and POV storage for rent.
