Combined Drill Sergeant School ground breaking at Fort Jackson
Brig. Gen. James H. Schwitters, left, Fort Jackson commanding general, leads the ground breaking ceremony Tuesday for the new Drill Sergeant School. William Hyman, the first commandant of the original Fort Jackson DSS, and Lt. Col. Trey Jordan, Army Corps of Engineers, were among the dignitaries present for the ceremony. The new school, which will be located at Marion Avenue and Kemper Street, is being built to accomodate the influx of drill sergeant candidates and instructors from Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., as part of the Base Realignment and Closure recommendation, which calls for consolidating the three schools to Fort Jackson.
