FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Parents can help their children get an early start on hunter safety education this summer with a class July 29 at 1 p.m.

The Hunter Safety Education Class for youth ages 10-16 is hosted by outdoor recreation staff and meets in Bldg. 5206, Rm. 1.

"This class will help youth understand all aspects of hunting safety and hunting regulations that will set a foundation to ensure safe hunting practices in their future," said John Clancy, ODR manager.

Field day exercise consists of tree stand safety, firearm handling (carrying and shooting positions), crossing obstacles, transporting firearms (casing and uncasing), firearm cleaning, muzzle loader, firearm identification (firearm actions, caliber, serial number), selecting proper ammunition, and loading and unloading, according to Jerry Riley, Certified Alabama Hunter Education Safety Course instructor.

At the conclusion of the class, conducted by Riley, students complete a 50-question closed-book examination.

Youth wishing to attend the course must register online at www.outdooralabama.com and complete the CD-ROM or Internet version of the course prior to attending. Attendees must print the certificate of completion and bring it to class.

"The hunter safety course (benefits) youth in preparing for the upcoming 2010-2011 hunting seasons," said Ken Jackson, Community Recreation division chief. "Outdoor Recreation has planned for youth deer and turkey hunting events."

Registration deadline is Wednesday at 6 p.m. The class is limited to 50 participants.
