Army 365

What is it?

Army 365 is a new U.S. Army initiative to help improve information sharing with added cybersecurity measures. This is a cloud-based capability to:

  • Bolster collaboration and connectivity.
  • Significantly improve operational effectiveness.
  • Increase cybersecurity and defensive cyberspace operations at a considerably reduced cost.

Army 365, which leverages Microsoft 365 capabilities, provides the Army with an enduring capability to collaborate across the force. The system hosts a range of resources to include video and voice teleconferencing, email, instant messaging, and access to shared drives.

What are the current and past efforts of the Army?

The Army is transitioning to Army 365. This new capability replaces the Commercial Virtual Remote (CVR)/Teams experience that was being utilized since March 2020. This shift significantly improves operational effectiveness, increases cybersecurity and provides the opportunity to eliminate other duplicative collaboration capabilities. The Army will use a three-phased approach to shift to Army 365.

  • Phase 1: Teams Migration: The phase begins with the service-wide transition of CVR and Microsoft Teams capabilities before the mandatory sunset of CVR by June 15, 2021.
    • Data will not transition automatically. CVR users are responsible to manually back up their data and transfer it to Army 365.
    • Initially, users will not have access to Army 365 through personal mobile devices.

  • Phase 2: Email Migration: This phase transitions the Army’s current Defense Enterprise Email (DEE) capabilities to Army 365 and begins in 4Q, FY21

  • Phase 3: SharePoint Migration: Due to the large quantity of data and the needs of each unit, this transition process will take the longest. This process is expected to finish sometime in fiscal year 2022.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned?

Program officials will continue to test and validate Army 365 moving forward. As it evolves, The Army will distribute user guides throughout the force to ensure a seamless transition across all phases.

Why is this important to the Army?

Army 365 improves the individual users’ experience while significantly improving cybersecurity above the current CVR capabilities. This is a game-changing integrated capability and pushes the limit on how the Army can improve its business and operational processes.
