JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas  – "In the battle for dignity and respect, our uniforms today make a statement louder than any words could," declared Col. James Jones, director of the Medical Capability Development Integration Directorate, addressing the gathered crowd on the quiet early morning of April 24, 2024.

The halls of the MED CDID at Fort Sam Houston were bustling more than usual. This day was not only significant for the Army's commitment to Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month but also emblematic of MED CDID's mission of integrating effective world-class military medical capabilities into everyday practices, including initiatives like Denim Day.

Jones and Sgt. Maj. Stephen Robbins, Chief Medical noncommissioned officer, were instrumental in leading the day's events, showing their leadership in driving changes that support the dignity and health of all service members. They ensured their command was not only participating but also leading by example in supporting sexual assault survivors and combating the stigma surrounding these crimes.

The observance began with a meaningful prayer led by Chaplain (Col.) Steve Cantrell, Chaplain CDID director. The staff and personnel bowed their heads while absorbing the chaplain's words on dignity, respect, and moral courage.

Following the prayer, Jones continued to speak, his words imbued with a deep understanding of the historical context of Denim Day and its relevance to MED CDID's broader mission.

"Today, by wearing denim, we stand in solidarity with victims of sexual violence. This simple act is part of our larger commitment to foster an environment where every Soldier is respected," he emphasized.

Robbins unveiled the official SHARP (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention) Proclamation, which he and Jones signed. This document underscored their commitment and served as a directive for the day, highlighting the observance's importance in fostering a command climate of dignity and respect.

Robbins stated, "It's about standing up and being counted, showing that we, as a force, are united against any form of disrespect or violence."

As the event concluded, Jones and Robbins discussed future educational efforts and initiatives planned throughout the month. They focused on the "This is My Squad" initiative, emphasizing team cohesion through mutual respect and understanding-principles at the heart of MED CDID's mission to enable the Army Health System.

Throughout the day, Soldiers and staff in denim walked the halls of MED CDID, each step a reminder of their shared pledge to maintain a command climate where dignity and respect are paramount.

The day was not just a declaration of support for Denim Day but a reaffirmation of MED CDID's role in advancing the health and dignity of the military community.
