FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — As the Army continuously looks for ways to modernize and upgrade, most of Fort Leonard Wood’s service member, civilian and contractor email domains are set to change in the coming months from “@mail.mil” to “@army.mil” — part of the ongoing transition to Army 365, a more secure, cloud-based suite of products that merge Microsoft Office applications with voice, video, chat and file-sharing capabilities.
According to Jim White, chief of the Enterprise Systems Division at the Network Enterprise Center here, Army 365 gives the Army the ability to collaborate more easily through what’s called unified network operations. A unified network — the linking of information technology architecture from both enterprise and tactical networks used by warfighters — allows for a more streamlined transfer of data and better supports Multi-Domain Operations.
“The Army's migration to Army 365 is a major unified network operations milestone and supports Army modernization by leveraging commercial services and technology,” White said. “This transition better postures the Army as we shift our IT business model to managed services in order to leverage industry’s ability to adopt emerging technologies.”
The migration replaces the Commercial Virtual Remote platform the Army began using in 2020. Earlier this year, Microsoft Teams was moved. The email migration to what’s called the Army 365 Exchange Online, or Army 365 EXO, is the second phase. The third will be SharePoint and establishing full functionality of OneDrive cloud-based storage.
White said the new email location provides each user with a 100GB mailbox – 96GB more than users had with the current Defense Enterprise Email — and Army 365 EXO is integrated with the Army 365 platform, including Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
Fort Leonard Wood personnel assigned under U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command units are scheduled to begin migrating email in mid-October, and U.S. Army Installation Management Command personnel are set to begin in early November.
Users are encouraged to contact their unit information assurance security officer for more information on actions needed to be taken.
All mailboxes must be migrated prior to the decommissioning of DEE on March 31, 2022, White said.
Additional information on Army 365 email migration is available in the Army Hub within the Microsoft Teams web or desktop app. Select “Army Hub” in the upper left-hand corner, then select “Email Migration Portal.” Before getting started, users are asked to verify with their unit when they may perform the email migration.
