What is it?

Structured Self Development (SSD) is mandatory web-based training that continues throughout a Soldier's career and builds upon content in noncommissioned officer (NCO) education courses. SSD exists in four levels and is supported by a robust assessment and feedback process that includes self-assessment tools. SSD is a set of content that must be completed within specified career points, prior to attendance at Warrior Leader, Senior Leader, and Seargant Major courses.

What has the Army done?

The Army developed SSD to bridge the operational and institutional domains and set conditions for continuous growth and life-long learning (LLL) for both the warrior and warrior leader. SSD is both an individual and first line leader responsibility executed at the individual's pace but under the supervision of the first line leader. SSD exists to build knowledge and skills through a defined sequence of learning approaches in addition to formal education and experiential learning. The Army has adopted the American Council on Education (ACE) criteria to evaluate self development materials for potential college credits.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

Soldiers who have already completed a resident Noncommissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) course will be "grandfathered" from prior levels of SSD. Soldiers will have to complete subsequent levels of SSD corresponding with their rank. Effective two years from the implementation date for each level of SSD, completion of SSD becomes a prerequisite for attendance at the next NCOES course. Automatic enrollment in SSD I was implemented Oct. 1, 2010, for Soldiers graduating advanced individual training (AIT) or one-station unit training (OSUT), with a prerequisite date of Oct. 1, 2010. The implementation date for SSD III for NCOs who have graduated Advanced Leader's Course (ALC) is Jan. 1, 2011, with a prerequisite date of Jan. 1, 2013. The implementation date for SSD IV for NCOs who have graduated Senior Leader's Course (SLC) is Jan. 1, 2011, with a prerequisite date of Jan. 1, 2013. The implementation date for SSD V for NCOs who have graduated the Sergeants Major Course is May 1, 2011, with an implementation date of May 1, 2013.

Why is this important to the Army?

SSD links self-development needs to NCO professional development efforts by ensuring that the self-development domain is well defined, meaningful, and integrated into the leader development process. SSD will bridge the operational and institutional domains and set conditions for continuous growth.
