What is it?
The U.S. Army Logistics Innovation Agency (LIA) is a field operating agency of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, HQDA. LIA's mission is to continually examine the Army's logistics capabilities, and examine ways that might make it more effective and/or efficient. LIA uses an adaptive organizational environment and the planning and execution strategy stated in the Army campaign plan to identify logistics solutions that address emerging and future needs. To achieve this goal, LIA combines premier processes and robust analytical test beds to explore and analyze new ideas. The organization focuses on exploration, technical and proof of enabler demonstrations, and logistics assessments that use high-end modeling. LIA sees beyond the limitations of today's systems by reaching into the future and leveraging the potential of rapidly accelerating technological change.
What is the Army doing?
LIA has provided new technologies in support of Army logistics for more than 15 years. In the mid '90s, LIA was instrumental in developing first an Army, and then a joint total asset visibility capability, that today is now routine. Likewise, LIA's work with active Radio Frequency Identification is now the DoD standard for the global tracking of cargo. More recently, LIA has enabled a suite of improved aerial delivery systems that make it possible to resupply locations in Afghanistan that no truck can reach. LIA is currently monitoring new and emerging technologies in the areas of energy, unmanned systems and data fusion. LIA's Agile Robotics project is working toward a robotic forklift demonstration, while its Energy team investigates the reduction of Jet Propellant 8 fuel consumption. The Common Logistics Operating Environment team is developing a holistic approach to the integration of logistics and command and control information systems that propagate platform health, sustainment forecasting and planning data from the platform to the national level. Together, these initiatives and many others are providing the foundation for continued advances in logistics.
Why is it important to the Army?
LIA enhances logistics business processes through technology insertion and analytical expertise. The organization follows a trajectory of discovery, exploration and demonstration to achieve logistics capabilities that are helping the Army prepare for changes and complex adversaries. Through LIA's vision of net-centric logistics, the Army will maintain and improve information superiority.
