What is it?

The U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center is hosting a "peer to peer" safety video contest to stimulate off-duty safety awareness by encouraging Soldiers, family members and civilians to create safety messages targeted to their peers.

The competition challenges Soldiers to create 30-90 second video safety messages that "take the boring out of safety", and post the video to any social networking site such as: Army You Tube, You Tube, Facebook, My Space, etc. Sending a link to the video to USACRC enters the video into the competition.

What has the Army done?

The Army has long known the value of peer involvement in keeping Soldiers safe. The influence, and often the intervention, of a battle buddy has kept many Soldiers from harm. With the launch of this initiative, USACRC hopes to harness the considerable power of peer influence to help prevent accidents and save lives.

Why is this important to the Army?

"Make a movie - save a life" is the competition's theme and is meant to demonstrate to Soldiers and families the value of their voice in promoting safety and preventing fatalities. The contest provides the ability to promote off-duty safety in a relevant and humorous way in a method that is common place.

Those making and submitting these short videos speak directly to their peers and in a venue that naturally informs and educates each other on the off-duty hazards they face each day. It also allows for a better understanding of the USACRC and the tools and resources available.

Additionally, this provides leaders with awareness on the safety concerns Soldiers and families find most important.


Videos topics can range across the safety spectrum, capturing best practices, lessons learned and "there I was" stories. Content can be prevention-based, focus on an awareness topic or relate a first-person experience, and can employ humor to get the message across. The primary criteria is that the video effectively convey ways to safely conduct off-duty activities.

Entrants then post them to the popular social networking sites, i.e., YouTube, Army YouTube, Facebook, My Space, etc. and then send the link to the USACRC through the posted email link.

All entries must be submitted no later than 11:59 PM Central Standard Time on March 31, 2009.

A panel will judge video entries and select finalists. Finalist will be notified by e-mail or telephone.
