With our Army on the move, maximizing materiel use can pay big dividends. When a unit deploys, its rolling stock can do better than sit idle in the motor pool. Think of it as modular logistics, matching materiel to missions.
Leading the logistics transformation is Army Field Support Command, which will become Army Sustainment Command this October, merging acquisition, logistics and technology capabilities under one flag - and giving combatant commands one entry point to the full range of combat service support.
Keeping Left-Behind Equipment (LBE) in the fight is a vital part of the Army Force Generation process, so sustainers are taking a global view, seeing one Army fleet - and shifting it around to enhance combat readiness and reduce costs.
LBE rolling stock can be redistributed to:
- Deploying units
- Modular Brigade Combat Teams
- Activating units
- Fill redeploying unit shortages
- Fill training sets
- Repair facilities for recapitalization
It's a huge, unit-centric mission - one sustainers are embracing as essential to keeping our expeditionary Army well-equipped. With thousands of moving parts, LBE is a multi-layered partnership featuring elements of the Army Staff, Army Materiel Command, repair facilities and supported units all doing their part. Besides rolling stock, other LBE is also gaining wider visibility. The nexus is at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., where Army Sustainment Command will be headquartered, expanding the field support mission to take on this and other far-reaching equipment management tasks.
From pre-deployment site surveys to re-issue to units, the LBE process frees deploying units from storage and maintenance chores, while keeping the fleet in the fight.
