Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael R. Weimer assumed duties as the 17th Sergeant Major of the Army on Aug. 4, 2023. Weimer’s most recent assignment was serving as the Command Sergeant Major for U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Weimer enlisted in the Army in 1993. After completing Special Forces Assessment and Selection in 1994, he graduated the Special Forces Weapons Sergeant Course and earned his Green Beret in 1996.
His first assignment was with 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), followed by nearly 20 years in Special Mission Units. In 2019, he served as the USASOC Operations Sergeant Major, and the Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan Command Sergeant Major. From 2020 to 2021, he served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader of U.S. Special Operations Command Central.
Weimer is a graduate of Norwich University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis. Weimer’s military education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System, Force Integration Course for Senior Leaders, Executive Leader Course, Summit Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape Course, Advanced Land Navigation Course, Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course, Air Movement Operations Course, and the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course.

He is married and has two children.
