Sergeant Major of Public Affairs


Sergeant Major Paul Schultz became the 10th Sergeant Major of Army Public Affairs on 4 January 2018.

As the Army’s senior public affairs enlisted Soldier, SGM Schultz advises the Chief of Public Affairs, Office of the Secretary of the Army, on all matters affecting the career field. He also devotes time to proponency issues, providing guidance and direction on current and future doctrine, force structure, and the training and equipping needs of public affairs personnel and units across the Army.

Born in Topeka, Kansas to a military family, SGM Schultz entered the Army as a 46R (Broadcast Specialist) in December 1993, after six years as an aircraft maintenance technician in the Air Force Reserves. He attended Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

Throughout his 24-year Army career, SGM Schultz has held leadership positions at every level including First Sergeant. Prior to his selection as the Sergeant Major of Public Affairs, he was the Command Sergeant Major for American Forces Network Europe in Sembach, Germany, which followed assignments as Public Affairs Sergeant Major at Eighth Army, Yongsan, Korea, Operations Sergeant Major for the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs at the Pentagon, Public Affairs Sergeant Major at U.S. Army Europe, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Command Sergeant Major of the 10th Press Camp Headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SGM Schultz’s military education includes all levels of the Army Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System, both the Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command Courses, and the Nominative Leader Course. He is a graduate of Class 62 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. SGM Schultz has a Master of Science degree in Leadership Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, Texas, and a Bachelor of Science in Christian Broadcasting from Calvary University in Kansas City, Missouri.

His military awards include the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (4th award), the Joint Service Commendation Medal (2nd award), the Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), the Joint Service Achievement Medal (2nd award), the Army Achievement Medal (6th award), the Air Force Achievement Medal (2nd award), the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Army Good Conduct Medal (8th award), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), the Iraqi Campaign Medal (2nd award), the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon (6th award), the Overseas Service Ribbon (5th award), the Army Service Ribbon, the Air Force Training Ribbon and the Army Combat Action Badge.

SGM Schultz and his wife Jean have two daughters, Erin and Megan.
