Christine E. Wormuth is the 25th Secretary of the Army. She was sworn in on May 27, 2021 following her nomination by President Biden and confirmation by the United States Senate.

As the civilian leader of the United States Army, Secretary Wormuth oversees the service's $185 billion budget and is responsible for decisions impacting nearly 1 million Active, Guard, and Reserve soldiers and more than 330,000 Army civilians.

Secretary Wormuth has worked on defense and national security policy for more than twenty-five years as a career civilian and as a presidential appointee. She was the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2014 to 2016, serving as the Secretary of Defense's top policy advisor and representing the Department of Defense on the National Security Council's deputies committee. Before that, she led the Pentagon's 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans, and Forces.

During President Barack Obama's first term, Secretary Wormuth served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Homeland Defense and as a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Defense at the National Security Council.

Prior to assuming her current role, Secretary Wormuth was the Director of the International Defense and Security Center at the RAND Corporation, providing research and analytical support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff and other organizations. During this period, she was a frequent writer and speaker on foreign policy, national security, and homeland security issues. Secretary Wormuth had earlier served as a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and worked in the private sector on defense issues.

Secretary Wormuth first entered the federal service in 1996 as a Presidential Management Fellow in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Originally from College Station, Texas, Secretary Wormuth holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Fine Arts from Williams College and a Masters of Public Policy from the University of Maryland.

She is married to a retired Navy officer and has twin daughters.
