FORT SILL, Okla. -- The deadline to file taxes with the IRS, or request an extension, is running out.

All tax returns must be filed with the IRS by the April 15 deadline if you do not have an extension or other special circumstance. If you owe the IRS money and fail to file your taxes on time, you may be subject to paying the tax along with interest and penalty fees. If you file an extension and pay your tax obligations to the IRS after April 15, you will generally still owe interest along with the taxes.

The Fort Sill Income Tax Assistance Center is here to help you file your taxes for free so this does not happen. If you need to file an extension with the IRS because you cannot file your taxes by April 15, the ITAC also offers this service at no charge.

The tax center accepts walk-ins during all office hours, but appointments receive priority Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Complicated returns, such as amendments and returns where the taxpayer is claiming rental property income, are only prepared by appointment. There are still appointment slots left for this tax season but they are filling up quickly.

The center is open until the last day of the tax season April 15. There will not be tax preparers available to assist you after tax season ends. Don't miss the deadline.

The tax assistance center is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center offers free tax preparation to all eligible service members, retirees and their dependents. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 442-6445.
